Petite Messe Solennelle

July 21, 2016 @ 12:00 am

Gioachino Rossini called his Petite Messe Solennelle “the last of my sins of old age.” Written just five years before his death, the Mass was Rossini’s last major work, and like all his music, it is gorgeously lyrical, spirited and engaging. Petite only in instrumental accompaniment, and not particularly solemn, the original Petite Messe Solennelle was a chamber mass for just 12 singers, two pianos and harmonium.

In this live performance by the UWA Choral Society Christopher van Tuinen conducts a full choir of over 100 voices accompanied by pianist Irene Shaw, organist Dominic Perissinotto and respected West Australian soloists Katja Webb, Courtney Pitman, Perry Joyce and Andrew Foote. Calming, occasionally joyful, often angst-ridden, this concert is not to be missed.

WHERE: Winthrop Hall, University of WA
WHEN: Sunday 21st August at 2:30pm.
COST: $45 and $40 (concession)

Dear Lord, here it is finished, this poor little mass. Have I just written sacred music, or rather, sacrilegious music? I was born for opera buffa, as you well know. Not much technique, a little bit of heart, that’s all. Blessings to you and grant me Paradise.” Rossini
