Perth Symphonic Chorus presents the Australian premiere of INVICTUS: A Passion, by Howard Goodall and J.S. Bach’s Cantata Christ lag in Todes Banden BWV 4.
Together these works offer a powerful contrast of Easter themes with music belonging to beautiful sound-worlds over 300 years apart.
Bach’s immortal cantata was composed in 1707 and has become synonymous with Easter. Based on the Gregorian chant Victimae Paschalis, Bach’s setting of the Lutheran hymn is hauntingly beautiful.
INVICTUS (“unconquered” in Latin) sets the passion story in a one-part oratorio with choir, soprano and tenor soloists and a chamber orchestra. Goodall focuses on the female perspective of Christ’s crucifixion including Mary Magdalene and his mother Mary, with texts from poets including Emilia Lanier and Christina Rosetti.
